Workstation Pro is amazing

I bought VMware Workstation Pro for my new home lab setup, and it has been fantastic! The academic discount was super helpful, saved me a bunch. Installation was easy, and I got my VMs running in no time. I've been experimenting with different OSes, and it handles everything smoothly. I even migrated a few older VMs without any issues, which was a relief. I will definitely shop here again for future upgrades, and I've already told my classmates how good it is.

Fusion Pro for Mac

I grabbed Fusion Pro for my MacBook a little while ago. Needed to run some Windows stuff for work, and it's been pretty solid. It was easy enough to get set up, and I had Windows running in a VM in about an hour. The performance is good, though it does chew through battery a bit faster, but that's expected. Overall, it does what I need it to do, and I haven't really had any problems with it.

Good for ESXi free

Downloaded ESXi Hypervisor for free. It was straightforward. Works well for my small server at home. No issues with installation or basic use.

What's the deal with their return policy for digital downloads? If I buy something and it doesn't work out with my setup, can I get a refund?

G Gwen 2 months ago
They do have a refund policy for digital downloads, but there are usually conditions. I think it's within 30 days and you have to deactivate the license. Best to check their official refund page though.

Yeah, I returned a license once within the trial period because I messed up my purchase. It was pretty straightforward, just had to contact support and tell them I hadn't used it much. Got my money back without too much hassle.

I'm thinking about grabbing a Workstation Pro license, but I heard some stuff about Broadcom owning them now. Is everything still working the same, or should I be worried about future changes?

C Chris 1 month ago
It's true Broadcom bought them, but for desktop products like Workstation, I haven't seen any major changes in how they work or get supported. Still the same product, just a different parent company afaik.

Yeah, it's definitely a topic of discussion in the community. For individual users and desktop products, it seems to be business as usual. The bigger changes seem to be more on the enterprise side of things, like how licenses are packaged for large companies.

Does anyone know if VMware does perpetual licenses anymore, or is it all subscription based now? I hate subscriptions for software I just want to own.

D Daisy 1 month ago
For some of their desktop products, like Workstation and Fusion, you can still get perpetual licenses. It's not all subscription. But for the enterprise stuff, it's mostly subscription now.

You can usually choose for Workstation/Fusion. I bought a perpetual license for Workstation a while back, so they definitely still offer it for those. The big cloud/data center products are more subscription focused.

Trying to decide between VMware and VirtualBox for a home lab. Anyone got experience with both? What are the big differences for a casual user?

T Tara Romero 1 month ago
For just screwing around at home, VirtualBox is fine and free. But VMware is way more robust, especially if you plan on doing anything serious or needing better performance. It's a noticeable step up.

VMware tends to have better hardware integration and performance. VirtualBox is good for basic stuff but if you're pushing it, VMware usually feels snappier. Plus, VMware has more advanced features if you ever need them down the line.
